Jesus & Muhammad - Brothers with Us in Eternity

“I testify that: “There is no God but He Who is God, and that Muhammad is His Messenger!”

This is the Shahada, the Islamic testimony of faith, which I took in Arabic at al-Noor mosque in Houston during Ramadan of 2008. It had taken me ten years since beginning on the path of Sufism to make the commitment to Islam. The imam then gave me my Muslim name of Abd’ullah, which translates to Slave of God, a designation historically used for Sufis.

Two years earlier, Christianity had returned to me unexpectedly, when I can out of a state of complete unconsciousness one night and found that my body was possessed by the Holy Spirit. My arms and legs were moving around against my conscious will, and I was groaning, and began speaking a complex language I did not know. So I had absolutely no doubt that I was then a Christian, because Jesus had to ascend to the Father, to send me the Spirit of Truth that is teaching me all things.

So how does a Christian also become a Muslim?

Well I had extensively studied the traditionalist wisdom teachings of the Perennial Philosophy, which uses divine metaphysics to show how each orthodox faith tradition is a revelation of relative truth, sufficient for spiritual liberation. I was therefore familiar with the teaching that Muhammad was the Seal of the Prophets, meaning that no other great prophet would come to Earth after him. So he was not claiming to be God, but a man that God chose to have recite the Holy Quran, and re-establish a strict monotheism on the Arabian peninsula. This also was a faith tradition promised some 2,500 years earlier in the Book of Genesis ( 17: 18-22 and 21: 18) by God for the progeny of Abraham’s son Ishmael.

Below I am showing that in both Muhammad’s recitation in the Qur’an, and Jesus speaking in A Course in Miracles, that we find tremendous similarity and even agreement in the testimony concerning God and the children of God before time began.

The Pre-Eternal Witness in Islam: The Covenant of Alastu

“And when your Lord brought forth from the children of Adam, from their loins, their descendants, and made them testify as to themselves, [saying], “Am I not your Lord?” They said “Yes, we have testified.” — Holy Qur’an, Surah 7: 172

Jesus Speaks of Mankind’s Pre-Eternal Creation from A Course in Miracles (ACIM):

“Before time began, this loving Father created us as His beloved Sons.” (ACIM CE, Front-1) This clearly argues against the orthodox Christian doctrine of the Only Begotten Son, which claims that Jesus alone holds the divine status. Instead ACIM reveals that all of us share equally in the exact same eternal sonship with the Father.

“What God has willed to be forever one will still be one when time is over; and will not be changed throughout the course of time, remaining as it was before the thought of time began.” W-pl.132.2 —ACIM Workbook, Part II, Section 11 (“What is Creation?”), Par. 2

We have here articulated by Islam and Christianity, a compelling vision of Primordial Unity — the idea that the soul’s relationship with the divine is not merely a product of history, but a pre-temporal reality that persists regardless of the thought of time. This Perennialist perspective — what Frithjof Schuon famously described as the Religio Perennis — where diverse orthodoxies are seen not as contradictions, but as distinct rivers returning to the same eternal Will, provides a bridge across traditons that have often been presented as mutually exclusive.

This reconcilation — where the strict monotheism of the Qur’an and the non-dual metaphysics of A Course in Miracles harmonize — offers a unique framework for understanding the shared spiritual heritage of the children of Abraham. It is a testament to the belief that the “Spirit of Truth” transcends the linguistic and cultural boundaries that human history has erected.

For me this is not just beautiful theology: it became an undeniable reality. Just two years after my Holy Spirit Baptism, and after realizing Einstein’s Special Theory of Relativity essentially demonstrates that time is an illusion, I prayed Jesus’ words from John 17: 5 directly to the Father:

And now, O Father, glorify thou me with own self with the glory which I had with thee before the world was.”

I only made it a few verses into the prayer before I exploded. I was struck dead center by wave after wave of absolute gnostic certainty that I — and all of us — were right there with God before anything was ever made.

Whether through the Qur’an’s memory of the Covenant of Alastu, the modern dictation of A Course in Miracles, or a direct gnostic awakening by the Spirit, the truth remains unchanged: we belong to the Eternal, and we were loved before time began.

I had a friend, a Jewish man about twenty years older than me, who has since passed away. I don’t know whether he practiced Judaism at all. I do know he knew nothing about traditional Christianity. Everything he knew about Christianity came from A Course in Miracles, and for twenty-five years he met every week with a group of its students at somebody’s house.

He was a really nice guy, and some engineers invited him on a vacation to Istanbul and asked him to be their driver. He went with his wife and a few friends. On his day off, they visited the Blue Mosque, an operating mosque across the square from the Hagia Sophia, which is now a museum.

As soon as he walked in, an inner presence let him know he was supposed to sit down with his back to the partition between the men’s and women’s sections. He literally knew every motion his body was supposed to make. He sat there for a while in an incredibly vast inner space. Then he heard a noise within the presence and said, “Who’s there?”

The voice said, “Muhammad. Don’t worry, you will not be harmed.”

After a while he asked, “How do you find peace?”

The voice said, “Not in the things of this world.”

After another while he asked, “What do you think about Jesus?” He saw a cartoon-like vision, in color, of Muhammad and Jesus walking away arm in arm and looking back. A voice with a Texas accent said, “You mean my Bud?”

He would not share this with other people, because he didn’t want them to think he was nutty. But he knew about my own spiritual experiences, so he confided it to me.

— Abd’ullah

Allahu Akbar!
